Author Carey Gillam Offers Insight on Herbicide Dangers in the U.S. Food Supply

Atlanta, GA – Author Carey Gillam offered a sobering look at the increasing use of chemicals in U.S. agriculture during a lecture and book signing at the Claudia Nance Rollins Building auditorium at Emory University on Wednesday, Nov. 15.

Sponsored by the Emory Department of Environmental Health, the Emory Office of Sustainability Initiatives, Environment Georgia, Georgia Organics and U.S. PIRG, Gillam outlined the insights in her recently published book, Whitewash: The Story of a Weed Killer, Cancer, and the Corruption of Science. The book is published by Island Press.

ThePad on Harvard Groundbreaking Draws Community and Officials to Celebrate Milestone Development

College Park, GA – More than 60 people from throughout Metro Atlanta gathered at 1777 Harvard Ave., College Park, to show their support for ThePad on Harvard, a mixed-use, transit-oriented development 400 feet from the College Park MARTA Station.

Public officials and business leaders hailed the project, which will begin Phase I construction of 109 deluxe apartment units immediately, as the cornerstone for revitalization of the communities around Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport. College Park Mayor Jack Longino told the gathering that ThePad on Harvard is a “cutting-edge development,” and the first multifamily project built in College Park in 40 years.

Atlanta, GA – ThePad on Harvard, College Park’s transit-­‐oriented, mixed-­‐use development, will break ground for its residential Phase I at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2015, on the site at 1777 Harvard Ave., College Park.

For Jerome Russell, one of the partners in ThePad on Harvard Residential LP and President of HJ Russell and Company, the event will commemorate an extension of his family legacy. His father, Herman Russell and the company he founded, played a key role in the 1970’s expansion of Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport that made it one of the most important aviation hubs in the world.

News Needs a Human Element

NPR recently ran a story pitting one of its reporters against a computer programmed to write a news story. http://www.npr.org/sections/money/2015/05/20/406484294/an-npr-reporter-raced-a-machine-to-write-a-news-story-who-won

The computer wrote its story faster, but the result was an utterly bland recitation of facts.  NPR reporter Scott Horsley’s story had sparkle and context. As a discerning reader, I know which of the two I prefer.

KSU junior creates, sells sustainable startup

KENNESAW — Business students everywhere dream of launching and selling their own startup companies. Jett Hattaway has already achieved that goal — all while still in school at Kennesaw State University. Hattaway, a 23-year-old KSU accounting major, co-founded Bright Idea Energy Solutions in July 2013. Atlanta-based Velo Solar snapped up the Marietta-based company in March.
